In 1890, 15 individuals, presumably from Chautauqua Institution, petitioned the Town of Chautauqua for permission to form a fire department under the Membership Corporation Laws of the State of New York.

In 1906, the Fire Department was at last incorporated.

The stated purpose of the Department was to "fight fire and conflagrations" in Chautauqua Institution and adjoining territories.

All of this was done under the supervision and approval of the Supreme Court justice.

At the time, the activites of the Chautauqua Volunteer Fire Department were funded primarily through donations and other such contributions.

Since 1934, several important pieces of legislation were passed by the New York State Legislature

One such act led to the establishment of the Chautauqua Utility District (CUD), while another act helped to establish Town Law.

The CUD provided the "first housing for the CFD in a building across the street from the present fire hall."

The Town Board, in the meantime, acting under provisions to the Town Law, established Fire Protection District #1 outside of the Institution and contracted with the Department for emergency services .

The last significant act was passed in 1991.

Under the Town Law, a new district was established with a Board of Fire Commissioners, and the Commissioners were given the power to levy taxes on properties for the purpose of providing emergency services. The Chautauqua Fire Department is the conveyer of both fire and medical emergency services.

The State of New York gives the Fire District the right to establish a tax levy, and also provides the property owners and registered voters a voice via the annual elections.

The Department eventually outgrew its first hall, located at the corner of Massey and Bowman, and as a result, moved across the street to its present location.

The new hall consisted of three bays, a meeting hall, a kitchen, and a recreation room.

Eventually, a new addition was built to accommodate a new ladder truck and a new tanker truck.

In the fall of 2006 we completed and dedicated our new new fire hall.
